JEDDAH: After 48 hours adrift at sea, a scuba diver was rescued off the coast of Shuaiba, 180 km south of Jeddah, an informed source told Arab News on Friday.

“The fact that he was found alive after a 48-hour exposure and after a three-dive day is quite remarkable,” said the source. “I don’t know if he is still OK.”

The diver, described only as a young Saudi man, was diving with two friends on Tuesday. At the end of the third dive, one of the men did not surface as expected. Precise details were unclear. However, it appears the two men alerted the Saudi Coast Guard after unsuccessfully finding their companion. The Coast Guard initiated a search and rescue operation using GPS coordinates from the vessel, but the team was unable to find the diver by the sunset. The search continued on Wednesday to no avail. On Thursday, however, the man was found alive. The source said the men were reportedly spearfishing with their scuba gear, which is illegal in the Kingdom.

It’s Not Just Pink-Scuba Diving Equipment for Women!

Monday, December 7th, 2009

Men are from Mars and women are from Venus, one common theory that characterizes the division between the two sexes… now to what extent should this battle impose itself on the diving world? Today’s women want to be more active; more are pushing their own limits physically and really enjoying it!

Scuba diving is now a level playing field, the female populations of certified divers, Instructors and dive masters have been increasing for the past few years and so has the demand for scuba gear that fit our needs.  Our bodies shape and complexion demands different lines, adjustment and distribution on the scuba gear… it takes more than adding a pink line or “girlie” design on an already existent piece of equipment to target women.

pink-gearSome manufactures (like Mares) are opening their mind and ears to welcome ideas in order to provide  better customer service;  try outs, critics, suggestions are being appreciated to improve the quality and the comfort of the ladies scuba gear. But on the other hand there are companies affected by the poor economy and declining sales and as a result the products with low demand are taken away from their production lines and yes, generally speaking that will be ours.

Women divers need to speak up! Manufacturers want to hear what you have to say!

Here are a few things you can do to help, guide, and orientate the manufactures:

  • When purchasing new gear, ask a lot of questions and discuss concerns about the use, the fit, and pros and cons. Talk to that manufacturers sales rep about whether the product was designed for a unisex market or if they designed it specifically for women or men.
  • When servicing your gear speak directly to the technician. They are normally the ones who assist with the manufactures seminars and voice your concerns to the managers.
  • If there was a product (for women) that you liked and has been discontinued, ask for the reason, the sales rep at the shop usually has contact with the sales rep at the manufacturer.  If more women speak up when  good product is removed from production, the manufacturer may see that it was a mistake!
  • Attend gear demo days such as DUI’s DOG (Drysuit Owners Group) Days. You can try out all their products and get amazing feedback directly from them.

There is no turning back girls we are only going to get bigger and stronger! Manufacturers are watching and listening! Its time to be vocal about what you use when you dive…what you like and dislike and why!  Feel free to leave us comments here or on our Facebook Fan Page or our Facebook Profile! We will happily pass your comments on to manufacturers.

Scuba Diving Equipment, The How To’s of How To Buy for Self Contained Underwater Breathing Apparatus!

Tuesday, July 14th, 2009

These days, we seem to be seeing a large amount of scuba diving clubs and coaching schools opening up everywhere – even in the northern United States. S.C.U.B.A, an acronym that stands for ‘Self Contained Underwater respiring Apparatus’, and yes, we’re talking about scuba diving equipment which allows a scuba diver to enjoy sustained visits to the wonderful and unique areas of our oceans, lakes, and rivers.

The only thing that even comes close to scuba is snorkeling – but snorkeling is usually enjoyed from the head of the water looking down. Scuba diving plays a vital role in such occupations as forensics, underwater construction, and underwater salvage -p_fins_v16_blue1 to name a couple of the big players.  Those exciting television programs like Jacques Cousteau and his underwater work, and the series ‘Sea Hunt’ starring Lloyd Bridges ( an action journey, fiction show from the 60’s ), have played a significant part in bringing scuba diving to the eye of the public. Contrary to what you could think, the first step in learning to scuba dive is to get the right scuba gear

Instruction from a professional diver before undertaking scuba diving is crucial. Contact your local YMCA (or similar organization listed in the yellow pages of your yellow pages ), to arrange for the pro instruction they offer. Then get your gear to do some weekend scuba diving. If you find that you really enjoy the sport of scuba diving, go on and purchase the equipment you want! Basic scuba diving gear includes a mask, ‘flippers’ or fins for your feet, a diving watch, tanks and regulators.

You may want to employ a diving wet suit and carry a knife. Other gadgets and gadgetry like world positioning devices, floatation devices, surface balloon markers, etc, can be postponed but are important for every diver to have.

Remember it takes a special sort of apparatus to fill an air tank. You can’t take your tanks to the closest gas station and fill them up with air from the automobile tire air hose! Oil and all types of other impurities must be filtered out before the air is said to be of an adequate quality level to respire. You have before you an alien arena, a whole new world, a quiet respite of sea creatures, fish, and — the unknown. It is the ‘unknown’ that might keep some aspirants out of the scuba diving environment, but it’s the same ‘unknown’ that draws many into this sport! Stories of treasure, and sunken ships of old, and great sea monsters lure many to the sea — and keep others away! Irrespective of your reason, scuba diving is like nothing else you can do on this planet. Each spot you lay your foot is in generally untouched by other humans. You truly ‘Go where no person has gone before!’ My advice? Just do it! Take the challenge and experience it for yourself. You have a great journey to gain – and perhaps a fortune too!

What a Near Death Experience in Scuba Diving Looks Like, Dive Within Your Limits!

Sunday, July 12th, 2009

I was directed to this video by Margo of ScubaDiverGirls, my dear friend. Look at this with a sober eye. I NEVER report diver deaths, K2 is not a bringer of bad news. But this is a testament to how dangerous this sport can be to the careless.

Dive consciously, dive within your limits.

Dive Safe, will you?

Scuba Dive the Beauty of the Sea of Cortez, Mexico

Thursday, June 25th, 2009

Bring your Scuba Gear to an entrancing, exciting vacation city. Cabo San Lucas is a little town on the end of the Baja Promontory in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. It is approximately one thousand miles south of San Diego, California, approximately twenty-two miles southwest of the Los Cabos Global airport and eighteen miles west of San Jose del Cabo. Las Cabos is located on the southerly end of Baja California Sur. The active, more unruly resort community of Cabo San Lucas is located on the west end of the promontory and the more sedate, more often Mexican town of Cabo San Jose is located approximately eighteen miles to the east of Cabo San Lucas.

Between the two towns is eighteen miles of resort communities found on the sea edge. It is an active flourishing area.

A short history. Herman Cortez set sail to the reported island which was full of gold and pearls and inhabited by Amazons in 1535 with three galleons and over six hundred males and females.

He at once discovered there wasn’t any gold and pearls nor were there Amazons. In discontent he left and sailed south after naming the area Santa Cruz. It wasn’t until after World War Two a grouping of Southern Californians discovered that they could fly to La Paz and then go by rutty roads to the shores of Mar de Cortes. It had been a carefully tended secret that continuously leaked out the sea of Cortes was plentiful with fish and was well-protected. The weather was almost perfect. As there were no roads, long yachts and private aeroplanes kept the pretty sea vistas exclusive. In addition the women and non-fisherman were discovering the sun, fine excellent beaches and beautiful sunsets. Scuba Diving is impressive with sights of Giant Manta Rays, Hammerhead Sharks, Pilot Whales, and for the treacherous. Feel your place in the pecking order by diving with Humbolt Squid. It was become the destination of many world travelers.

A favored port-of-call, Cabo San Lucas hosts four hundred cruise ships a year and receives over 1,000,000 annual visitors. Where firstclass, five star resorts abound, Cabo San Lucas offers family activities and top class comforts. Cabo, as we affectionately call it, has firstclass golfing, upscale shopping, moderate temperatures nine months of the year and is regarded as the marlin capital of the planet. As well as the resorts, for the traveler who favors to hire vacation villas or stay at bed and breakfasts or boutique hotels which hire for the week or month.

There are a few to choose from. The active nightlife embodies the Cabo Wabo, a must see, El Squid Roe and the most recent Zoo Bar and Dance. Many cafeterias surround the Mall with specialties from many states. The main city is built in a horseshoe agreement round the bay for the numerous fishing and sightseeing boats that offer fishing, pirate ship, whale watching, sundown watching, scuba diving,  train your snorkel and scuba mask on the wonders of the reefs. Journeys to the Lover’s Beach where you can spend an afternoon. There’s parasailing, sailboating. As well as the water pleasures, you can go four wheeling into the desert along the sea where there are no houses and no hotels.
